The ten chapters of this book tackle various themes on the place and role in agricultural production of traditional fallow practices in tropical Africa, the importance of improved fallow systems, as well as alternatives to those systems, which are tending to disappear. These views of fallow practices and their future, carried out by authors specialising in different fields, deal with the biological, agronomic and socio-economic aspects of the subject.
The contributions provide an overview of current knowledge on the agrarian transition from systems that still use fallow practices to contnuous cultivation systems.
This second volume should be read in conjunction with the first, which consists of contributions to an international seminar held in Dakar in April 1999. It is aimed at researchers, teachers, students and those working in regional development in tropical Africa. The book provides much useful and original data collected in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger and Senegal during the "Fallow Systems in Tropical Africa" research project (1995-2000).
