Sponsored by the French Haematology Society, this collection has become one of the most prestigious ones in the field of oncohaematology. It offers short books, whose objective is not be comprehensive but rather to answer the most important questions on each of the subjects addressed. Coordinated by the greatest French specialists, each book is an essential continuous medical training tool.

Myelodysplastic syndromes are myeloid haemopathies which mainly affect the elderly. They are becoming more frequent quite simply due to the ageing of the population. More often of unknown aetiology, these syndromes are secondary to chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy in 15% to 20% of cases. These clonal haemopathies of pluripotent stem cells frequently develop into acute myeloid leukaemia.

In this monograph, the French-speaking group on myelodysplastic syndrome offers an information update for non-specialists on the aetiology and physiopathology of these clonal haemopathies (particularly the role of cytogenetic abnormalities), and especially on the classification of these syndromes and their prognosis, using the recently revised IPSS (International Prognostic Scoring System) score. The authors review the different treatment approaches and offer their recommendations for clinical practice.
