The HIV/Aids epidemic has become a major health problem and an obstacle to development. In Africa, Aids spread rapidly and is now one of the leading causes of death among adults: 23.3 million people infected with the HIV virus live south of the Sahara.
As the epidemic is still spreading, it is important both to step up prevention programmes and to improve treatment of the people concerned.
Access to hospital care is beyond the means of the majority of sufferers.
The Ambulatory Aids Treatment Centres introduced by the OPALS are one of the welcome initiatives taken by non-government organisations. All patients can visit these centres, which were devised to fit in with African culture as well as national health services.
Edited by Marc Gentilini, chairman of the French Red Cross and of the OPALS, this book gives an overview of all the work done by the centres set up by the OPALS in Africa and describes in detail the progress they have accomplished.
Published jointly with the OPALS (Pan-African Organisation Against Aids) and the Ambulatory Aids Treatment Centres in Africa
