Rabies is still a worldwide affliction. More than 50,000 people die every year after being bitten by an infected animal and most of those deaths occur in Asia.
Even though an effective vaccination is now available, it is little used because some countries still prefer products made from nerve tissue. These are less expensive but also much less effective.
Therefore the major prevention and public health question is: how can we improve access to the vaccination and use it preventively? And how can we help the countries concerned to produce and use such vaccines?
The struggle against rabies and human infection also means dealing first of all with infected animals, especially dogs. The book offers a precise description of all the strategies introduced and the varying degrees of success encountered.

Sponsored by the Mérieux Foundation and written by leading international specialists, this book reveals a real public health problem that is little known in France.
It also pays tribute to Charles Mérieux, whose work made a major contribution to combating rabies in Asia. He died in January 2001.
