This book reproduces the discussions held at the 13th National Conference on Clinical Pharmacology, held in Giens (Var) in September 1997

Started in 1985, the conferences have been regularly sponsored by the Medical Drugs Agency, INSERM (French health and medical research institute), the Ministry of Research and Technology, and the Pharmaceuticals Industry Union, with partners such as the Paris and Marseille hospitals and welfare authorities.

What makes these conferences original are the following three factors, which have ensured their continuing success:
- They bring together experts, half of whom are academics (hospitals, universities, INSERM, CNRS - the French scientific research centre, the Medicaments Agency) and the other half from the pharmaceuticals industry.
- Their aim to is provide practical answers to practical questions, with the help of a series of round tables.
- The participants, selected by the Sponsorship Committee and the Scientific Committee, are invited to take part in the entire proceedings.
