This book is the first in the "Meetings on the Economic Aspects of Health Care" series organized by the GlaxoSmithKline company.
The purpose of the meeting held on June 26 2001 was to tackle certain issues related to social coverage and the current health care system using the specific methodologies of the epidemiologist and the economist.
This book summarizes the results of surveys focusing on four major themes:
- Descriptive epidemiology designed to improve the evaluation of health care needs and enhance the way in which such needs are met.
- Analysis of the costs of dealing with various health care problems with a view to understanding how effectively resources are deployed by institutions.
- Medical/financial evaluation which attempts to make comparisons between, on the one hand, the clinical outcomes of specific treatments or therapeutic strategies and, on the other hand, costs.
- Observation of current medical practice with respect to the use of drugs and alternative therapeutic modalities. This type of study gives information about how drugs are really used with a view of developing ways to improve resource allocation.
