Urothelial carcinomas (tumors) of the upper urinary tract (UCUUT) are rare tumours representing approximately 5 % of all urothelial tumours.
Nephroureterectomy (NUT) is the reference treatment for UCUUT. However, satisfactory oncological results have been obtained with conservative endoscopic treatments, making these methods a credible alternative to NUT for superficial or low grade UCUUTs.
In practice, there is an increasing tendency towards the use of minimally invasive surgical methods allowing conservation of both renal function and the urinary tract.
The progressive identification of distinct carcinogenesis mechanisms for urothelial and bladder carcinomas and those of the upper urinary tract is opening up the way towards the development of specific treatments adapted to the molecular profile of each tumour.
