Report of the seminar held in Chamonix, Haute Savoie, France, from 26 to 29 June 2002.
The aim of the seminar was to bring together epidemiologists and clinicians to compare their respective viewpoints and their approaches to epilepsy today.
Over the past 35 years, the many articles published about the prognosis for epilepsy have adopted either a very clinical viewpoint based on specific cases and taking little account of the epidemiological background or, on the contrary, an epidemiological view based on the study of populations and taking little account of important clinical data.
The book is divided into two parts:
– The first deals with methodological issues concerning prognostic studies (particularly regarding remission and mortality) as well the results of long-term cohort studies.
– The second part covers the clinical aspects and prognosis of several specific epileptic syndromes, in addition to prognosis of the illness and the results of temporal and frontal lobe surgery.
An essential book for psychiatrists, epilepsy specialists, epidemiologists and clinicians.
