2nd edition
MAJOR UPDATE
since the first edition published in 1999
Chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathy is becoming the third leading cause of death on a world scale. The second edition of this book deals with chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathy as one disease, as opposed to various forms of the disease. This is because pneumonology specialists want to have a single target on which to focus their efforts regarding prevention and treatment.
The book reports on various developments that have come about since 1999, when the first edition was published. The chief development is probably greater awareness of the scale of the problem on the part of the main international institutes, which have set themselves the goals of supplying a consensus-based foundation for understanding chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathy and of laying down guidelines for future research.
The authors of the second edition have:
– gone into more detail in the chapters devoted to the definition, nosology and epidemiology of the disease;
– put the emphasis on the inflammatory processes in pathogenesis;
– introduced the concept of chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathy as a systemic disease in the chapter dealing with physiopathology;
– updated the chapters devoted to diagnosis and patient care;
– completely rewritten the second part of the book, which deals with exacerbation and decompensation.
