The vast majority of cases of depression tend to recur. Recurrent depressive disorders affect about 5% of the general population every year and are a common reason for consulting both psychiatrists and general practitioners. They make up a quarter of the courses of treatment provided by psychiatrists and a third of the 25% to 30% of psychopathological problems for which people consult their family doctor. And yet depression is still not always diagnosed correctly and treated appropriately.
The authors set out to make health professionals more aware of this common and sometimes life-threatening pathology and to give them the clinical and epidemiological information they need for early diagnosis. The book also supplies an update on forms of treatment that can be used to prevent recurrence of depression. The various strategies available to the doctor are discussed – methods such as drug treatment (antidepressants and thymoregulators) and psychotherapy that should be prescribed on a case-by-case basis – and compared in the closing chapter, which focuses on practical issues.
