France was lacking an atlas of health. That was what gave rise to the idea of launching a major research project on differences in health according to geographical area. The data collected and examined has been divided into three volumes, the first of which is devoted to mortality statistics and causes of death.
It has been observed that there are major inequalities in health in France according to where people live, concerning both mortality and health, and the provision and efficiency of health care. This detailed geographical analysis of those differences offers researchers new lines of inquiry and gives decision-makers arguments for orienting health policy.
This first volume is made up of three sections:
• AN ANALYSIS OF OVERALL MORTALITY IN FRANCE
underlining the differences in life expectancy from one region to another (as much as ten years between the north and south of the country). The degree of urbanisation emerges as an important factor in determining different rates of mortality by age group.
• AN ANALYSIS BY CAUSE OF DEATH
in which the authors have drawn up "mortality profiles" according to sex and geographical region. The disparities that appear for each medical cause of death are commented on in detail. The notion of "avoidable mortality" is mentioned, with the authors blaming breakdowns in medical care and prevention that lead to major regional gaps.
• AN ANALYSIS BY REGION
refines the study to intra-regional disparities and compares the situation in cities with that of the surrounding area. It is shown that as the size of cities increases, the phenomena of segregation and inequality affect mortality throughout the region.
Edited by three leading experts in the geography of health and epidemiology, this unprecedented book, with its 200 colour illustrations, is an extremely useful reference work for geographers, demographers and those in charge of public health. The analysis and comparison of data covering such a fine scale as types of employment and urban neighbourhoods provides a wealth of information available for the first time in a single publication.
